As an elementary teacher working with the Eureka Math² curriculum, I know firsthand how powerful—and how challenging—it can be for young learners. The structure, rigor, and depth of Eureka Math² offer students an outstanding foundation in math, but for many special education students, the traditional assessments can become a roadblock instead of a bridge.

That’s why I started creating modified Eureka Math² tests—designed specifically with special education needs in mind.

Why Eureka Math²?

Eureka Math² (also called Eureka Squared) is a newly revamped curriculum developed by Great Minds. It builds on the strengths of the original Eureka Math, offering:

  • A stronger focus on conceptual understanding
  • More interactive, student-centered lessons
  • Improved digital resources and accessibility
  • Greater alignment with the science of how kids learn math

But with all this added rigor and structure, assessments can sometimes feel overwhelming for students who need extra support. That’s where modified testing can make all the difference.

The Struggles Special Education Students Face with Standard Math Tests

For students with IEPs or 504 plans, traditional math tests often present unnecessary barriers:

  • Dense formatting and small print
  • Complex word problems with too much text
  • Tasks that test executive functioning more than math skills

These students may know the math—but they can’t demonstrate it under pressure with inaccessible materials. That’s where my teacher-created, SPED-friendly modified tests come in.

What Makes My Modified Eureka Math² Tests Different?

My modified assessments are:

  • Visually simplified with clean layouts and fewer distractions
  • Chunked into smaller sections to reduce cognitive overload
  • Rewritten word problems that keep the math but reduce the reading level
  • Multiple-choice or scaffolded answers when appropriate
  • Aligned 100% with Eureka Math² modules and lessons

They’re designed by a teacher who’s in the classroom, using the curriculum daily, and supporting students of all abilities.

How I Use Modified Tests in My Classroom

Every week, I prep both the regular and modified assessments. I use:

  • Small group testing for SPED students
  • One-on-one testing with added read-aloud support when needed
  • Visual aids and manipulatives when allowed by accommodations

These tests not only support my students—they give me a clear picture of what they truly understand, not just what they can navigate on paper.
