Connect a Winter Christmas Holiday concept into all content areas! This printable and digital thematic animal unit about reindeer covers cross-curriculum content using reading, writing, math, and science skills for students in grades 2 or 3. Talk about making connections! This independent work packet also includes a student-made booklet! I use this product in order to cover multiple content areas in one lesson. This is also great for an independent center or even homework! I also typically assign this to my students when a sub is in the room. Great independent or group activity for winter or Christmas time!

Reading Comprehension

The students can read a non-fiction paragraph about reindeer and answer 5 comprehension questions. Answer key is included!

Narrative and Informative Writing

There is a narrative writing prompt WITH a teacher example to give to your students. It is always helpful for my struggling writer’s to see an example first. There is also a non-fiction booklet that the students can create by searching for facts about reindeer and coloring the pictures. Talk about being engaged in learning!

Math and Science

This unit also included math word problems involving two digit addition and subtraction without regrouping. The answer key is also included! There is also a fun cut a paste science activity to identify the parts of a reindeer.

Lesson Ideas

While teaching this lesson I read aloud the book “How to Catch a Reindeer” by Alice Walstead. Click HERE to purchase on Amazon. This story was a great way to introduce the unit to my students and to keep them engaged. I then completed the reading, writing, math, and science activities throughout the week. I completed this unit by making the student non-fiction booklet.
